David Thomas
David Thomas is a working scientist based in Pennsylvania, whose curiosity and love of the natural world brought him to art and photography.
Thomas captures the beauty and light of the natural world in every situation, Plants in bloom, decline, decay, or somewhere in between. As a scientist he sees the natural world from many points of view; from the many wavelengths of light that make up each color, the microscopic organisms in a pool of water, the breakdown of chlorophyll that causes a leaf to change color in Autumn, and the chemical bonds that break in a decaying tree.
Thomas’ work is rooted in naturalism and the traditions of amateur scientists of the 19th century, exploring and documenting the world around them. Thomas even employs the very photographic techniques that were used in this early time of photographic history: the cyanotype. His formal education includes a PhD in analytical chemistry from Drexel University with a career as a chemist.
